It was another victory for Team Nigeria as Bose Omolayo grabbed gold in the powerlifting event at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
It is Team Nigeria’s sixth gold medal of the on-going Rio Paralympics.
Contesting in the women’s -79kg, Omolayo lifted 138 kg to finish top of her weight category. The silver medal went to Lili Xu of China who lifted 135 kg, while Chinese Taipei’s TzuHui Liu claimed the bronze medal with a lift of 131 kg.
Earlier in the day, Ndidi Nwosu also won gold in the women’s powerlifting. She beat off competition from France’s Souhad Ghazouani and Egypt’s Amany Ali.
On Sunday three gold medals, one each from Team captain Lucy Ejike and fellow Power-lifter, Paul Kehinde as well as Onye Lauritta in Women’s shot put had increased Team Nigeria gold medals to four.
Ejike achieved her feat in astonishing style as she shattered the Paralymics and World record three successive times to dominate the women’s -61kg event in powerlifting.
Before then, Kehinde in the -65kg men’s category had lifted 218kg to beat his rivals to the gold medal. He becomes the second athlete after Roland Ezuruike who on Friday won Nigeria’s first gold in Rio, also in powerlifting.
